Collecting & Using School Climate Data

MSA believes that the key to effective school climate improvement begins with collecting valid and reliable data from the students, faculty, and staff at your school. This data enables schools to focus on the needs and concerns of their school community and target school improvement efforts so that they are meaningful and successful.

Collecting School Climate Data
The SafeMeasures School Climate Survey helps schools gather information on how all people in their school feel about their school experiences. The data collected on this survey is categorized in three factors:

  • Factor One: Student Safety & Freedom from Harassment
  • Factor Two: Peer Respect & Belonging
  • Factor Three: Adult-Student Relationships & Respect

In addition to the school climate survey, MSA collects data using a variety of other methods. Schools may choose to have students participate in any of the following data collection activities:

  • Student Summits
  • Focus Groups or Interviews
  • Beeper Studies
  • Art Therapy

Using School Climate Data for School Improvement
Once schools collect school climate data using any of the methods above, MSA facilitators work with the student and adult leadership teams to analyze the data and set goals for school improvement. School leaders are then helped to construct action plans around these goals and set benchmarks for measuring progress and success.
